Tips To Re-enter The Workforce

Whether for family or other reasons, if you have pushed “pause” on your career and are looking at choosing to opt back into the workforce, the first thing that might set in is panic.

Where do I start?

I don’t know anyone.

What can I offer now?

Let us offer you a couple other, less stressful, options. Re-entering the workforce after a mid-career pause can be intimidating. You can try to pick-up where you left off, but chances are a lot has changed in the workforce since then. Another option is to make slight alterations to your original career path — a pivot of sorts, and brush up on some new skills to build on the skills you already have and make yourself more marketable in today’s workforce. Regardless of the direction you choose, here are three helpful tips to re-enter the workforce today.

3 Tips To Re-enter The Workforce

Be patient with yourself

First, take a moment to acknowledge this huge change happening in your life. It is absolutely okay to take a step back, just breathe, and observe where you are at in this present moment in time. With any kind of change, whether it is good or bad, comes stress. This is a good time to be kind to yourself, practice good self-care and be patient with yourself as well as the journey ahead.

You have a lot to offer and sometimes it takes a change in perspective to see that about ourselves. Think about what direction you may want to go now and write down the action steps you will take to get there. Don’t worry if you’re not sure if this is the right list or if items are in the right order. Take each step, one at a time. That is all you can do and that is enough. Be patient with yourself through this process and do what you can, when you can, and know that in itself is perfect progress.

Brush up on your skills

Your interests over the years may have changed. What you were once trained to do may look different in today’s workforce than it did when you first started. Get Noticed Through Networking

We have all heard, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” While it is also “what” you know, the “who” of it can increase your chances of landing that job significantly. When people have a chance to get to meet you face-to-face, hear you speak, get to know you, your credentials and what you are capable of — this significantly increases your chances of success.

People are much more likely to hire or recommend someone when it is made easy for them. Putting yourself in front of lots of employers, makes it easy for them to choose you. Join a local club or networking group in your area and walk through one door and watch many more doors open.

If you are not quite sure where to start on your journey in using these tips to re-enter the workforce, plan to join us at an upcoming event or workshop. We can help you brush up on your skills plus gain further insight into yourself and the direction that might be best for you.
